Strathmore is a nonprofit multi-disciplinary arts center and presenting organization located with-in a mile outside the Capital Beltway in North Bethesda, Maryland. Best known for performances and events at the Music Center at Strathmore, the organization has been presenting accessible, affordable visual and performing arts in the smaller Mansion at Strathmore and across its 16-acre site since 1981. ABOUT THE JOB

We are looking for a reliable hands-on Staff/Senior Accountant to assist in preparing statements and analytical reports that follow all regulatory and accounting guidelines under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer. You will be responsible for identifying and preventing discrepancies and helping maintain control systems.

An effective Staff/Senior Accountant has good knowledge of accounting principles. You must be an organized professional with a great eye for detail. You must be reliable and able to carry out tasks autonomously and collaboratively.

The goal is to contribute to keeping the accounting and financial processes of the company up to standard and ensure accurate financial reporting and control. You will report to the Chief Financial Officer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include, but are not limited to, the following:

On-going Accounting

    • Enter receivables and payables in Financial Edge
    • Prepare and input donations into donor and ticketing software Tessitura
    • Prepare and input cash receipts, journal entries, and payroll distribution into Financial Edge
    • Deposit checks into the bank using remote deposit

Month-End Accounting

    • Review, edit, and import into Financial Edge the point of sale, internet, ticketing, and development transactions.
    • Upload banking transaction from their online accounts.
    • Recognize revenue for ticket sales, event space and concert hall rentals
    • Reconcile balance sheet account balances monthly. Identify inaccurate balances and correct monthly.
    • Prepare and record monthly closing journal entries (consistent with company policy).
    • Prepare and remit monthly sales taxes.
    • Reconcile General Ledger fixed assets to physical assets.
    • Prepare monthly financial reports and variance analysis.

Payroll Processing

    • Process bi-weekly payroll which includes inputting data from paper timesheets into excel and uploading into an outside payroll processing company.
    • Responsible for the maintenance and accuracy of the Payroll database.

 Annual and Other Procedures

    • Provide assistance to the Chief Financial Officer with external audit requests.
    • Provide assistance to the Chief Financial Officer in preparing year-end audit work papers
    • Prepare annual 1099 Miscellaneous Income filings
    • Prepare annual 1042 Annual Withholding Tax Return for U.S. Source Income of Foreign Persons

General

    • Ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with GAAP and internal policies and procedures.
    • Balance daily responsibilities with long term projects. Drive long term projects to completion.
    • Identify inefficient processes and strategically develop and implement process improvements (with measurable results).
    • Support the Chief Financial Officer with special projects.

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS in Business with an emphasis in Accounting or Finance.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance and a minimum of three years of experience as a staff accountant; at least one year should be with a non-profit organization.  CPA or candidate preferred. Experience with Financial Edge and other large automated accounting systems a plus.
  • Must have strong experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Working knowledge of payroll processing required.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required. Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines required.
