The Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), located in Washington, DC, is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to partner closely with the leadership team in charting the organization’s future growth and strategic response to a competitive environment and an increasing demand for the organization’s programs and services. The CFO is responsible for the financial management of the organization and will oversee the accounting functions, budgeting, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, cash flow management, investments, and financial controls and policies. This individual will also oversee operations and information technology. Additionally, the CFO will be responsible for providing executive leadership, vision, and oversight for the organization and serve as a collaborative member of the senior management team, providing strategic and accurate financial advice to the Chief Executive Officer, the Board, and the senior leadership team.
Reporting to the CEO, the CFO will also strengthen financial and organizational operations through development, design, and implementation of key initiatives and projects, processes, and procedures. The incumbent will translate the strategic direction into financial plans that all staff can understand and adhere to through the organization’s budget process. Using strong financial acumen, the CFO will act as a careful steward – budgeting for projects and innovation, while mitigating risk and appropriately allocating resources.
Major Responsibilities include:
Strategy & Leadership
•Drive strategic thinking and future program growth opportunities as an integral member of the organization’s executive management.
•Assist with strategic planning, priority setting, and overall organization risk management.
•Work with the CEO to set the organization’s tone at the top to ensure all financial policies and procedures are properly implemented and adhered to by all HRS staff.
•Support innovation through management of key initiatives by translating strategic goals into financial standard practices, ensuring that staff understand their role in ensuring its financial success.
•Assist departments in developing financial plans and budgets to ensure successful implementation.
•Adapt to changing needs, re-prioritizing projects, or re-allocating resources as needed.
•Assess existing policies and procedures, recommend changes, and implement enhancements to increase the Society’s operational effectiveness and profitability.
•Determine the financial feasibility of board initiatives and proposed new business opportunities.
•Perform financial analyses; strategize how to implement initiatives and proposed opportunities in effective, yet fiscally responsible ways.
•Establish, measure, and report on financial benchmarks for the organization.
•Oversee the monthly financial reporting process to ensure executive management and the Board receive clear, understandable, and reliable reports.
•Monitor industry and economic trends to develop financial strategies to increase program revenues, enhance member benefits and identify growth opportunities.
•Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and HRS policies for all financial related functions.
•Lead the annual operational planning and budget development and ongoing projection processes.
•Monitor monthly and annual budget and fiscal reports.
•Serve as signatory for Society contracts.
•Lead Society’s financial portfolio and banking relationships; serve as primary staff contact/liaison to the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Audit Committee.
•Assist departments with budgeting, planning, and resource allocation; serve as the “go-to” resource for risk mitigation and all fiscal, personnel, and contractual matters.
•Oversee the day-to-day cash and investment operations, ensuring policies and procedures are in place to maximize cash flow and interest earnings on excess cash.
•Monitor and ensure that all service providers are providing appropriate custodial, reporting, pricing, and scope of services under contractual agreements.
•Oversee the financial reporting and information technology functions, utilizing third party vendors; negotiate all leases including equipment and office space.
Leadership & Mentoring
•Serve as a role model and mentor for all staff; promote the organization as an employer of choice.
•Ensure new initiatives are aligned with organizational culture; ensure staff have the systems and information they need to be successful.
•Ensure staff members receive appropriate training and development; establish goals/objectives/priorities; monitor staff performance; conduct performance appraisals.
•Drive collaboration to achieve goals and objectives by ensuring effective team-based project management processes are in place.
HRS is seeking a CPA with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related business field. Qualified candidates will have at least ten years of experience leading complex financial operations and planning, with a proven track record of leading a broad range of financial operations, including achieving financial growth goals, successfully engaging with senior leadership in the optimization of product and program delivery, developing pricing strategies, and performing return on investment analysis for future initiatives. Proven experience launching new initiatives and processes and knowledge and experience managing Board and Board committee relationships are a must. The ideal candidate will be a problem-solver and process-oriented, with an innovative, collaborative, and proactive approach. Relevant non-profit experience is a plus.
