Return to About Us GWSCPA History Founded in 1923 as the DC Institute of CPAs, the Greater Washington Society of CPAs (GWSCPA) serves approximately 2,200 members in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. Both CPAs and non-CPA financial professionals can join! This makes the GWSCPA unique among CPA societies in the nation. The GWSCPA serves a concentrated cross-section of business, industry, government, education and public accounting professionals.
The name of the organization was changed to the GWSCPA in 1996 from the DC Institute of CPAs to better describe the geographic location of its members. More than 70% of the membership of the organization have an address in Maryland (40%) or Virginia (35%). The Maryland members come primarily from Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties. Virginia members come from Arlington and Fairfax Counties as well as the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church. Some active members come from southern Loudoun County.
The organization was all volunteer until it hired the late Harvey Lampshire in the mid-60's as its first Executive Director. He was succeeded by John S. Roosma, Jr., who was given a lifetime honorary membership in 2000. Roosma was followed by John J. "Jack" McNally, CPA who served from 1995 through 1999. In July 1999, the organization selected Robert Uttenweiler who served until July 15, 2007. After a brief period of time with an interim Executive Director, the GWSCPA hired Kari Bedell in December 2008.
