Career Awareness Program
In conjunction with the MACPA (Maryland Association of CPAs), the Greater Washington Society of CPAs (GWSCPA) is offering a Career Awareness Program to interested high schools throughout the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. The goal of this program is to encourage students to seriously consider what they will do after high schools and to introduce continuing education in accounting as a career option.
The Career Awareness Program covers the following:
Discussion about choices for life after high school
Interactive exercises to demonstrate "living on your own" expenses, obligations, etc.
Video about choosing a career, using accounting as a sample
Guest speaker from CPA firm, corporation, organization, etc.
Hand outs about post-high school plans, accounting education, etc.
The GWSCPA will also work with the community to fill requests from schools, colleges, and community organizations seeking CPA volunteers to address classes, assemblies, meetings, or special events. Popular topics include:
Careers in Accounting
Tips on Taking the CPA Exam
Career Trends
The CPA Experience
Personal Finance
These presentations provide the opportunity to help the public understand difficult financial and business issues, give students a bird's eye view of the CPA profession and for CPAs to become involved in the community.
The DC Board of Accountancy has finalized a change that allows candidates to sit for the CPA exam in DC once they have acquired 120 semester hours, effective as of May 8, 2009. (Candidates are still required to complete 150 hours for licensure.)
