About Us

The Greater Washington Society of CPAs serves over 2000 CPA and Non-CPA members in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.  Founded in 1923 as the CPA society for the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area, the GWSCPA has a special niche among CPA societies, serving as a more concentrated cross-section of business, industry, government, education and public accounting than can be found anywhere.  The Society's purpose is broad in scope and includes:
  • Fostering communication, creating learning opportunities and providing a large, helpful support network for members.
  • Promoting better public understanding of the profession.
  • Promoting high standards of professional competency.
  • Providing liaison contact with Capitol Hill, state and local governments.
  • Giving technical advice to standard setting organizations such as the Financial Accounting Standards Board, the SEC, and the IRS.
  • Protecting the public and enforcing ethical standards.
  • Encouraging members to become involved in public service.
Membership in the GWSCPA is open to all accountants holding valid CPA certificates from any U.S. State or Territory, as well as non-CPA accounting and financial professionals from government, not for profit associations, academia and other eligible categories.

The society channels its activities in part through more than 10 commitees and task forces.  Committees are designed to help members in their professional practice and career advancement.  Approximately 200 members are actively involved in committee work, ranging in scope from accounting principles to proffessional ethics, from industry and government accounting to business and personal taxes.

Educational activities of the society are carried out by the GWSCPA Educational Foundation.  The foundation annually conducts seminars and conferences that cover a broad range of CPA expertise, spanning government, industry, not for profit organizations and public practice.
