WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREA TRANSIT AUTHORITY Vice President, Accounting Washington, D.C. | Executive Leadership Team, Office of the CFO WMATA is seeking an accomplished finance executive to serve as Vice President, Accounting, providing enterprise-wide leadership for accounting strategy, financial governance, and stewardship of public funds. As principal advisor to the Chief Financial Officer, General Manager/CEO, and Board of Directors, this executive will set accounting policy, safeguard billions of dollars in operating, capital, and grant-funded activity, and ensure the financial integrity of one of the nation’s largest transit systems at a pivotal moment for the region’s transit funding future. ABOUT WMATA The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), known as Metro, is the region’s leading public transportation provider. Serving a 2,054-square-mile jurisdiction, Metro operates six rail lines, 98 stations, 126 bus routes, and MetroAccess, a shared-ride paratransit service. As one of the nation’s busiest transit systems, Metro connects communities, supports economic growth, and provides safe, reliable transportation — carrying 268.9 million trips in 2025 on a $5 billion operating and capital budget. WHAT YOU’LL DO • Lead Authority-wide accounting, payroll, reporting, and financial control strategy across operating, capital, grants, construction, and enterprise activities. • Direct the general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, billing, payroll, capital and grants accounting, and cash requisitions. • Serve as principal advisor to the CFO, CEO, Board, and auditors on accounting, reporting, and internal control matters. • Own the chart of accounts and lead modernization of accounting systems and ERP integration. • Ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB, FASB, FTA/DOT, IRS, and National Transit Database requirements. • Provide executive oversight of internal and external audits and drive corrective action. • Lead, develop, and hold accountable a team of directors, managers, and accounting professionals. • Play a central role in advancing Financial & Organizational Efficiency, one of the three core goals of the Authority’s Strategic Transformation Plan, Your Metro, the Way Forward. WHAT YOU BRING • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (or a high school diploma/GED plus four years of qualifying executive-level experience in lieu of degree). • 10+ years of executive/senior management experience in commercial or governmental accounting for a large organization, including five years of management experience. • Expert knowledge of governmental and enterprise accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and payroll administration. • Exceptional executive communication, presentation, and advisory skills, with the ability to brief the CFO, CEO, Board, auditors, and regulators on complex financial matters.
