- From Financial Statements to Funder Confidence: Using Management Accounting and AI to Prove Nonprofit Impact
Stephen King, Founder, The Fundraising Accountant
Stephen King
Stephen King, CPA, CGMA is an accounting innovator, nonprofit fundraiser, and lifelong champion for mission-driven organizations. He uniquely combines EY experience building global management accounting systems, with 40+ years helping nonprofits tell their donor story and make data driven decisions.
Steve started his nonprofit career at Amnesty International USA in 1989 where he served as Deputy Executive Director - Finance and Administration. In 1992 he took the lead over fundraising as Director of Development. Seeing the dawn of the Internet in 1995, Steve founded Virtual Growth Inc (VGI) - the first Client Accounting Service (CAS). He raised $43M and sold VGI to Insperity. In 2004 he started GrowthForce, a national CAS firm and sold that to G&A Partners in 2025.
Steve now serves as Executive Director of The Fundraising Accountant community which help nonprofit leaders use their numbers to treat donors like investors by applying management accounting, KPI dashboards, and outcome-based financial storytelling.
Nonprofit finance leaders are facing a tougher operating environment: federal funding uncertainty, economic pressure, rising service demand, and increased expectations from boards and funders. At the same time, most nonprofit financial reporting still stops at compliance: audits, 990s, budget-to-actuals, and traditional financial statements. This intermediate/advanced session shows how nonprofit CFOs, controllers, and their advisors can move beyond compliance reporting by applying management accounting, KPI design, and responsible AI to demonstrate program economics and impact. Participants will learn how to connect financial data to operating drivers, calculate more meaningful program costs, identify cost-per-output and cost-per-outcome measures, and translate those numbers into board-ready and funder-ready reporting. The session will also address the risks: weak chart-of-accounts design, poor labor allocation, unsupported ROI claims, AI-generated language that overstates impact, and the danger of confusing activity with outcomes. Using practical nonprofit examples, the session will show how finance teams can build a stronger bridge between accounting, decision-making, and funder confidence.

Focused on providing clients with thoughtful—and thought-provoking—consultation, his greatest satisfaction comes from fostering employee performance, team integration and organizational development.
Nonprofit leaders are navigating unprecedented levels of disruption, including workforce shortages, leadership transitions, economic uncertainty, evolving stakeholder expectations, and the growing impact of AI on how work gets done. While strategy, compliance, and financial stewardship remain critical, organizational success ultimately depends on a leader’s ability to build teams that can adapt, collaborate, and perform under pressure. Drawing on the Harvard Business Review Trust Triangle and Patrick Lencioni’s Five Dysfunctions of a Team, this session provides practical strategies for strengthening trust, fostering productive conflict, increasing accountability, and improving team effectiveness. Participants will explore common barriers to team performance and leave with actionable approaches for building more resilient, engaged, and high-performing teams. Through real-world examples and practical application, attendees will gain tools they can immediately apply within their organizations.

Reserve and investment decisions are among the most important financial choices nonprofit leaders make, directly influencing stability, flexibility, and long-term sustainability. Peer benchmarking can offer valuable perspective by showing how similar organizations structure reserves and allocate investments, helping boards better understand what is typical, identify potential gaps, and inform strategic conversations. Meaningful decisions, however, are grounded in a broader view that considers mission priorities, financial risk, access to funds, growth plans, and governance practices. In this session, we will explore how nonprofit leaders can use peer benchmarking to provide additional context, with a focus on insights from Raffa’s Study on Nonprofit Investing (SONI) Dashboard. Participants will leave with clearer questions to bring to their boards, actionable ideas for strengthening policies, and greater confidence in guiding reserve and investment conversations.

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing was once a dominant theme in nonprofit and institutional portfolios, with many organizations incorporating values-based considerations into their investment policies and decision-making. However, over the past several years, ESG has faced increasing scrutiny, political pushback, and shifting investor sentiment, leaving many nonprofit leaders questioning its relevance today. So where does ESG stand now? Has it truly faded, or is it quietly evolving into a more integrated and practical approach? This session will explore the current state of ESG investing, separating headlines from reality. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of how ESG strategies have performed, how asset managers and institutional investors are adapting, and how regulatory and political dynamics are shaping the landscape. Most importantly, the session will translate these trends into practical guidance for nonprofit organizations and associations. We will address how boards and finance committees can approach ESG thoughtfully.

Not-for-profits are navigating a higher-rate, more complex environment while facing tighter operating budgets and increased board scrutiny around liquidity, risk, and spending. Yet many organizations still struggle to answer a fundamental question: how much is truly available to support operations—and how should it be structured? This session focuses on aligning reserve strategy with real-world operating needs. We’ll explore how to determine appropriate liquidity levels, structure reserves across time horizons, and connect investment decisions to cash flow, risk tolerance, and governance priorities. We’ll also address how financial reporting and internal designations influence what is actually available for use—and how that should inform board-level decisions. Bringing together investment strategy, governance, and financial clarity, this session provides a practical framework to help organizations move from static reserve targets to a more dynamic, decision-driven approach.

For years, non-profit organizations have fought for fair indirect cost recovery, yet that focus, and its limited gains, has masked a critical reality: even “fully funded” grants can place significant strain on an organization when the true cost of execution is not understood. This session reframes the conversation from “are we recovering enough?” to “do we truly understand what this grant costs us and are we making informed decisions?”. In the current funding landscape, it’s time to move beyond indirect cost recovery and adopt a more comprehensive view of grant economics.

Nonprofits have weathered a series of financial storms in recent years—from the disruption of COVID-19, to the expiration of emergency relief funding, to tightening government budgets and shifting donor behavior. These challenges have highlighted a central risk: overreliance on any single source of revenue. Revenue diversification is often viewed primarily through a fundraising lens; this session expands that perspective, presenting it as a holistic strategy that includes earned revenue models and endowment development alongside contributed income.

Hartmuth Csanadi-Schwartz, Director of Business Operations, Arc of Southern Chesapeake
Most nonprofits don’t have a true technology roadmap—they’re reacting to issues as they arise. As one leader put it, “We’ve been making incremental decisions, but we don’t have a roadmap driving outcomes.” When IT leadership changes, vendor relationships shift, or funding fluctuates, that lack of direction quickly becomes a crisis. This session introduces a practical framework to assess technology maturity across five dimensions and build a prioritized roadmap tied to mission outcomes. Attendees will leave with a “Now / Next / Later” model that transforms incremental decisions into a clear, board-ready strategy, especially critical amid funding uncertainty and growing pressure to adopt AI responsibly.
